Abelard and Heloise

•  A monk and a nun whose love letters became world famous.

This is a tragic story and it has been told through years.

It started around 1100, when Peter Abelard went to Paris to study at the school of Notre Dame. That was because his parents had said it was the best well known school.

When he graduated everyone talked about him as an outstanding philosopher.

Fulbert, the cannon of Notre Dame wanted Abelard to tutor his niece, Heloise. But when they saw each other they fell deeply in love, conceived a child, and were secretly married.

Her uncle was enraged, so Abelard decided to send Heloise to be kept in a convent.

Thinking that he had left Heloise, Fulbert sent his men to castrate Abelard while he was sleeping. Abelard became a monk and devoted the rest of his life to learning. Beside the heart separation, the tragic couple remained in love.

Many years later their letters were found by their daughter Ameli. They had died but their love letters were published and became world famous.
